Multicultural Transition Counselling

Supporting Your Journey, Honouring Your Heritage

Moving to a new country can be overwhelming, and it's normal to feel unprepared for the sudden changes. These changes can deeply impact how you see yourself, your relationships, and your understanding of the world around you.

Cultural bereavement is the emotional distress and grief experienced by individuals when they lose their cultural identity, traditions, and social networks, often as a result of migration, displacement, or assimilation into a different culture. This type of bereavement can manifest in feelings of sadness, loss, and longing for one's homeland, familiar customs, and community ties.

Culture shock isn’t the half of it

The migration experience unchains a process that leads to the transformation of internal structures and internalized object relations. Whether you are a first, second or third-generation immigrant, there are challenges in creating a new life in Canada.

You may experience a sense of homelessness or rootlessness as a result of continuous contact with a new culture. Or your grief may be dismissed by others because migrating to Canada is viewed as a “good thing” or a “better” option than your homeland.

It’s possible that you grew up in Canada, raised by immigrants who tried their hardest to assimilate to the culture and make the process “easier” for you, only to feel disconnected from your homeland’s culture and practices.

Multicultural Transition Counselling at Refinement Room aims to give voice to the overlooked migrants that make Canada the multicultural haven it is. We want you to feel like you can honour your heritage and navigate Canadian culture authentically.
